ElectraNet engaged Fragile to Agile to support its transition to a service-oriented architecture. Existing systems lacked a coordinated integration approach, leading to data siloes, rekeying, and unnecessary costs. The organisation needed a clear understanding of its data flows, data quality, and business implications to inform the design and selection of the right integration solutions.

What Prompted Change?

ElectraNet recognised that its existing integration approach was increasing costs and creating operational inefficiencies, with critical data flows requiring manual rekeying across systems. As part of a broader regulatory funding cycle, there was an opportunity to secure investment for a strategic data and integration roadmap. This prompted a structured assessment of current data flows, data quality, and the business impacts of existing processes, with a focus on identifying quick wins and building a strong case for regulator approval.

Strategy in Action

Fragile to Agile was engaged to support ElectraNet's transition to a service-oriented architecture, beginning with the selection of an enterprise service bus (ESB) solution and the design and execution of a proof of concept. The proof of concept demonstrated that manual rekeying could be eliminated between the organisation’s two primary project management systems.

In a later stage, Fragile to Agile developed a business capability model and a common data/information model spanning the entire organisation. These artefacts provided a complete view of existing systems, interfaces, and data flows, forming the foundation for a strategic roadmap for data and functional integration leveraging the ESB infrastructure.

To strengthen governance and security, Fragile to Agile also developed a security reference architecture and associated principles, ensuring the integration program was both robust and aligned with organisational objectives.

Delivering Meaningful Impact

The adoption of the ESB solution, combined with the strategic data and integration roadmap, delivered immediate and long-term benefits. The proof of concept eliminated manual rekeying between core project management systems, reducing errors and improving productivity. The regulator’s approval of the roadmap secured the investment needed to deliver the program, enabling a coordinated approach to data and functional integration across the organisation.

The business capability model and common data/information model established a shared language and understanding of how systems, data, and processes intersect, supporting better decision-making and future planning. The security reference architecture and principles provided a strong governance framework, ensuring that integration initiatives were implemented securely and in alignment with organisational priorities.
