Strategic Operating Model Determination
About this service
This service determines the appropriate Strategic Operating Model, and consequent desired level of capability standardisation, for your organisation. An organisations Strategic Operating Model defines the desired level of process standardisation and process integration across business units as illustrated in the diagram below.
Driven by the selected operating model and the desired Business Intent, which capabilities should be standardised across the organisation is then determined (except where unification is the selected operating model where all capabilities are standardised by definition). This enables the decision on operating model to be realised/operationalised.

Why is it important?
The selected Operating Model is a critical input to the target state of an organisation’s business and technology systems. All design domains must reflect and enable this operating model. The most critical architectural implication is the level of standardisation of business capabilities that is appropriate for the organisation. If this is not clearly understood and propagated through all elements of an organisation’s design, achieving a high-level of agility, minimising cost and risk and maximising benefits will remain elusive.
How we work with you
The selection of which strategic operating model is best for your organisation is achieved through a 1-hour workshop with executives where we facilitate this decision based on describing the implications of each and what it would mean for your organisation. For all choices except Unification, a subsequent step is then required to operationalise this decision. Which capabilities will be standardised across the organisation? Â
First a start-point will be produced based on information gathered from existing documentation, augmented with interviews with Senior Management/Executive and representatives for each business area. A workshop will then be held to review and update that starting point. This will address 80% of the capabilities but the remaining 20% are typically more problematic or controversial and require more detailed analysis. This analysis will then be performed for these capabilities to provide you with the additional information required. This will typically address a further 15% of the capabilities. For any remaining contentious capabilities, the default position will be that those capabilities are non-standardised.
