EA Roadmap Development

About this service

An Enterprise Architecture Roadmap first defines a target state maturity for your organisations Enterprise Architecture capability, driven by the desired scope you wish the capability to cover and the outcomes you wish to achieve from this capability. It then defines a plan to reach this desired target state clearly defining costs, benefits, dependencies, resourcing, technology support, and the investment case for the roadmap.

The roadmap covers all four aspects of the Enterprise Architecture capability: People, process, data, and technology. It will identify the roles and skills required, define key bodies and processes, the key artefacts that will be produced and maintained and should the scale of the capability justify it, the adoption and implementation of an Enterprise Architecture tool (of if not what will be used in lieu of a dedicated tool).

Why is it important?

Enterprise Architecture is town-planning for your organisations business and Technology systems. It aligns your Business, People and Technology design so that together then can deliver your business strategy.  A well-structured and effective Enterprise Architecture capability enables you to execute your strategy with confidence (turn strategy into execution), while minimising risk and total cost of ownership and maximising benefits and future agility and adaptability.

There is no point in having a desire to establish an Enterprise Architecture capability, and achieve the desired benefits of doing, so if there is no vision for that capability nor plans to achieve it. The first and most important question to answer is whether the Enterprise Architecture capability is to cover Business Architecture domains of design (Business Process Design, Business Capability Design etc) or just Technology Domains of Design (Solution, Data, Integration, Infrastructure etc) – See Integrated Architecture Framework (IAF) for full list of all domains of design in an Enterprise.

This service applies when you have no existing Enterprise Architecture capability and wish to establish one, or where you have an existing Enterprise Architecture capability and wish to uplift its maturity, effectiveness, or efficiency and/or increase its scope (e.g., expanding to cover Business Architecture where its current scope is only Technology Architecture).

How we work with you

We deliver this service following our standard roadmap planning approach. We first understand “where are you now”, noting this step is not required if you have no existing Enterprise Architecture capability. We then define “where do you want to be?” – what good looks like for Enterprise Architecture at your organisation delivering a measurable (SMART) set of outcomes. We then identify “what do we need to get there?” – what artefacts (EA the noun) and what bodies and processes (EA the verb) are required to achieve the desired outcomes. Finally, driven by the gap between current and target state, we develop in collaboration with you a roadmap of activities, essentially a project plan, to move to that desired target state.

To support the execution of this service we leverage two key tools – the Fragile to Agile Integrated Architecture Framework (IAF) and the US Government developed Capability Maturity Model for Enterprise Architecture. These drive discussions respectively on the desired scope of the Enterprise Architecture capability and the desired maturity to be achieved in agreed timeframe.
