Domain Reference Architecture Development

About this service

The target state development service describes the overall target state for your organisation’s business and technology systems. This service elaborates that target state to define in more detail the target state for each domain of design e.g. security, data, infrastructure (see Integrated Architecture Framework for full list). This provides solution architects and other design roles with an exemplar of what good looks like for the domain; a set of principles/rules to follow to ensure that the target state is achieved and defines commonly used terms, so they are used consistently across the organisation.

The service requires that the Business Intent has been articulated as this is a key input to the development of principles. This dependency is due to a key differentiator in our approach to architecture principles development, namely that every principle must be linked to one or more of the business outcomes it is supporting, or there is no case for it.

Why is it important?

In the absence of principles and reference architectures, designers are operating without any guidance, and governance bodies are unsure what they are governing against, i.e., attempting to operate as a court with no legislation. This invariably fails.

Principles can be considered “the building codes” for an organisation and embedded in the contracts of any third-party providers. They define the legislation for your organisation to ensure that longer term and enterprise goals are balanced with tactical and business unit goals.

How we work with you

Domain reference architectures are driven by your organisations Business Intent. This dependency is due to a key differentiator in the Fragile to Agile approach to the development of architecture principles, namely that every principle must be linked to one or more business outcomes it supports or achieves. Equally, while the reference architectures leverage prior experience and good practice for the domain they are not “cookie-cutter” but designed for your organisation as required to achieve your business intent.

Firstly, a starting point set of principles, reference architecture and definitions will be developed leveraging Fragile to Agile intellectual property tailored for your organisation’s size and complexity and its desired Business Intent. A workshop will then be held with any experts in your organisation in that domain to further refine that starting point to produce the draft version. This draft version will then undergo a traditional review and update cycle to produce the final version.
