Current State Solutions Assessment
About this service
This step will first map the Current State solutions/applications to the Business Capability Model to reveal duplicates (opportunity for rationalisation); fragmentation (bad architecture/inefficient design); gaps (opportunity for efficiency gains); issue clusters (capability needs major overhaul); scope (the scope of a change/project) and standardisation (which capabilities should be standardised) as illustrated in the diagram below.
It will then assess, either qualitatively or quantitatively per your choice, how well these solutions support your business today and their ability to support achieving your desired Business Strategy/Outcomes.
Solution assessment reveals sticking points with current solution architecture in the form of Duplications, Fragmentation, Gaps, Issues, Scope and Standardisation.
Why is it important?
The first and immediate value is obtaining a clear understanding of the solutions deployed in your organisation; what capabilities they support; how well they support them today and their ability to support your business strategy/intent.Â
For organisations planning a material business/digital transformation this is crucial as:
- You must know where you are starting from before you can plan the journey;
- You must know whether current solutions can be retained (as is or with material changes) or must be replaced to achieve the business strategy/intent;
- An understanding must be gained of how easy it is to break apart the intertwined nature of existing solutions to design a realistic and cost-effective roadmap to achieve the Target State.
How we work with you
We first overlay all existing solutions onto the Business Capability Model. This solution overlay will be developed initially as a starting point by extracting major solutions from existing documentation and via interviews with relevant staff. This will then be validated and augmented via workshops where qualitative assessment data will also be gathered. Â
We then perform a more detailed qualitative or quantitative assessment (your choice) of how well the solutions support the capability today and, where it has already been developed, how well they support delivering the Business Intent, i.e., can be used in the target state. A qualitative assessment will be performed via interviews and high-level technical assessments of the solutions (e.g., vendor supported version; modern architecture) and will be delivered as series of BCM overlays and insights to provide sufficient understanding for Executive and Key Stakeholders to enable informed assessment of the as-is situation.
A quantitative assessment will be performed via survey and other material data collection activities, covering business and technology aspects, and in addition to BCM overlays as per qualitative assessment it will also deliver as a set of spider diagrams depicting the overall business and technical assessments of your environment as well as individual spider diagrams for each material solution.
