Architecture Governance Establishment

Architecture Governance is the practice and orientation by which enterprise architectures and other architectures are managed and controlled at an enterprise-wide level. Architecture Governance is essentially about ensuring that business is conducted properly. It is less about overt control and strict adherence to rules, and more about guidance and effective and equitable usage of resources to ensure sustainability of an organisation’s strategic objectives.

There are broadly three parts to governance for which the Westminster system of government is an appropriate analogy. Governance requires three separate components i.e., legislation, courts, and police force. This service establishes the courts and police force and their operational processes to enforce, or grant exemptions where it makes sense to do so, the legislation (principles) from the Domain Reference Architecture Development service.

Why is it important?

Often the policing of the application of design principles is experience based, rather than codified, and is applied differently across business units. This can result in inconsistent application of principles and guidelines as it relies heavily on the relative experience and knowledge of the individual. A significant improvement can be made to this design review step with clearly documented architectural principles tied to supported business outcomes.

There is no point in having domain reference architecture legislation (principles) if there are no mechanisms for checking for compliance.

How we work with you

This service draws from Fragile to Agile Intellectual Property to define and produce a starting point for the deliverable documenting the role, attributes, and processes of the proposed governance bodies. This will then be tailored to your organisational needs and as far as possible leverage existing bodies (extending their remit) rather than establishing new governance structures. This will be subsequently validated and amended during workshops with appropriate stakeholders. The workshops will also be used to obtain buy-in to the governance role and relevance which will be a fundamental aspect of the ongoing success of this initiative.

Once all the aspects of the governance bodies and processes are completed, they will be collated into a single deliverable describing each of the key aspects. This will be followed by a traditional review and update cycle.
