Solution Architect - Fragile to Agile

How can Fragile to Agile help me as a Solution Architect?

With project deadlines and budgets narrowing and business as usual demands growing, Solution Architects must be enabled to make important and timely design decisions. Architecture artefacts and effective governance are required to facilitate decision making and align solution designs to business intent. This also needs to be supported by a mechanism to articulate business risk and trade-offs if a solution’s design is changed midstream due to cost constraints and other organisational factors.

Challenges for a Solution Architect

I don’t have access to design standards and principles to facilitate solution designs with consistency.
Identifying business intent and a clear set of measurable business outcomes linked to that intent should act as fundamental input to inform solution designs. We can facilitate the development of these inputs, at both an organisational and project level, by using a unique facilitated technique which identifies current issues, desired outcomes and actions. The outcomes are expressed from multiple perspectives and linked to architecture design principles which inform all domains of design from a business perspective.

Business Intent Definition

Our Integrated Architecture Framework caters for both business and technical architectures across all domains of design. Strategic reference architectures provide guidance on technology investment decisions and how various domains of solution design will be achieved. They include high level reference architectures and a set of design principles, or building codes, that guide design activity. Their adoption accelerates the design and delivery of IT solutions by their re-use and alignment to agreed business based outcomes. They also provide a basis for governance to ensure the consistency and applicability of technology to support ongoing business needs and priorities.

There is no clearly articulated business intent for projects or architecture design principles aligned with that intent.

I don’t have access to architecture design standards to determine the correct level of service granularity for solution designs.
Determining the correct granularity and boundaries of services is essential for maximising the reuse of the services and realising the promise of service oriented architecture. Our approach to identifying service containers and their boundaries is unique within the industry and, together with our Business Capability Model, is based on well-defined engineering principles which are applied consistently for services, internally or externally sourced.

Service Container Determination

It is difficult to communicate the business impact of existing or new solutions in business meaningful terms.
The level of rigour applied to the development of our Business Capability Models make them suitable for both business consulting and deep technical design. It provides a single tool that can seamlessly flow from business consultation to technology architecture design and maintain business engagement throughout the process. This not only provides a shared language and collaboration tool to facilitate these discussions but, with the use of heat maps and overlays, is fundamental to demonstrating the impact of retaining existing or acquiring new solutions from a business capability perspective.

They include high level reference architectures and a set of design principles, or building codes, that are specifically linked to business outcomes which inform all design elements within a domain.

The Fragile to Agile Architecture Governance Framework governs the currency and relevancy of an organisation’s Enterprise Architecture and therefore the design integrity of the organisation itself. It is an extensible framework that can blend with an organisation’s existing corporate and IT governance mechanisms to protect its technology investments and ensure solution delivery is consistent with its target state architecture.

Architecture Governance Framework

Most projects that I’m involved with start to develop the solution before the business case has been assessed and approved.
Fragile to Agile’s Conceptual Design Process (CDP) is specifically architected to ensure that core decisions regarding scope and solution are made in the design phase so that solution delivery can commence with a level of certainty. Analogous to the construction of a house, the CDP generates the information required to commence the building phase such as the foundations, footings, floor plans etc. It does not consider the colour of the walls or internal fittings as these decisions can be made at a later stage and without significantly impacting cost and time.
The CDP captures measureable business intent of a change, assesses its business viability and provides a mechanism to terminate non-viable initiatives early to ensure constrained resources are optimally employed. It also produces a business case and conceptual solution summary and provides a greater level of accuracy in time and cost estimations. From an aggregated perspective, it is designed to improve the overall speed and quality of change within an organisation.

We lack a consistent process to convert an idea into a business case and solution design with accurate cost estimates.

We want to adopt an Agile delivery method but are unsure how to implement this change.

I often have to cut corners during the detailed solution design phase due to unrealistic estimates made early in the planning phase.

I don't understand the extent of our Enterprise Architecture artefacts and how to use them effectively.
Designed for both existing and aspiring Enterprise Architects or for those that want to deepen their understanding of the discipline, the Fragile to Agile Enterprise Architecture Essentials course is an interactive learning experience to generate a deeper understanding of Enterprise Architecture concepts and techniques and how to apply them in a practical way to effect successful business change.
