Internode - Fragile to Agile

Client Synopsis

Internode

Organisation Overview

Internode is one of the largest telecommunications carriers in Australia, offering high quality voice, data and entertainment services. It is an internationally connected IP carrier and manages its own private network that has high capacity links between Australian capital cities and Australia, USA and Japan. Internode’s customers are a diverse range of corporate, business and residential users.

Until recently, Internode was a 100% South Australian owned business, born out of skills developed in the original deployment of AARNet, the academic sector precursor to the commercial Internet in Australia. Since that time, it has pioneered Internet developments in Australia, leading the industry with a passion for technical innovation and excellence few other carriers or service providers have been able to match. It was acquired by iiNet in December 2011 but has retained its brand and independence.

Fragile to Agile Engagement

At the time of the engagement, Internode had experienced a period of rapid growth, from 50 to over 300 employees in less than three years, with an even greater growth in customers and revenue. During this period of growth, Internode had reacted tactically in its deployment of information technology to support the growth. As a result, a deterioration of the performance in the technical environment and significant increases in time and cost of change was being experienced.

Fragile to Agile was engaged to develop a target state architecture for the organisation and a transformation program to transition to the target state. Based on a business-driven approach, Fragile to Agile defined with Internode a set of measurable business outcomes for the program and assess the ability of current systems to support the achievement of these outcomes. A Business Capability Model was then constructed and, in consultation with Internode executives and subject matter experts, was employed to develop the target state for its technology. A program of work was then delivered to affect the transformation which is currently being executed.

Finally, Fragile to Agile then assisted Internode to adopt the full breadth of its Integrated Architecture Framework for business change and transformation, including Strategic Planning Framework, Investment and Prioritisation Framework, Conceptual Design Process and Architecture Governance Framework.
