Client Synopsis
HAMBSOrganisation Overview
HAMBS supplies and supports the HAMBS (Hospital and Medical Benefits System) software application and information technology solution for the private health insurance industry in Australia. Established in 1991, HAMBS was formed when the then users of the HAMBS application purchased the intellectual property from the original developer of the software application.
At that time, there were three HAMBS employees supporting 18 private health insurance funds. In a rapidly growing industry with increased regulation, technological advances and greater competition, HAMBS continues to grow and expand the services available to its customers. Currently, HAMBS has over 75 staff servicing 23 health funds nationwide which include the hosting of the application and network services for 19 of those funds.

Fragile to Agile Engagement
Fragile to Agile was originally engaged to assess the approach taken to modernise the HAMBS software application which was conducted internally and failed to deliver expected business outcomes. As this assessment revealed short comings in the architecture, the engagement extended to providing architectural oversight and expertise in the definition of a target state architecture to achieve the required business objectives of the modernisation initiative.
The engagement included the development of a Business Capability Model, definition of the business outcomes for the revised modernisation program based on the target state architecture and a corporate data model for the HAMBS application. Other artefacts delivered to support the program included integration and construction reference architectures to support the design and maintenance of the target state, and an architectural governance framework to provide the required oversight for the program.
