APA Group - Fragile to Agile

Client Synopsis

APA Group

Organisation Overview

APA Group (APA) is Australia’s largest natural gas infrastructure business, owning and/or operating approximately $9B of energy infrastructure assets. Its pipelines span every state and territory in mainland Australia and deliver approximately half of the nation’s gas usage. Unique amongst its peers, APA has direct management and operational control over its assets and investments and employs over 1,200 people across Australia. APA also holds minority interests in energy infrastructure enterprises including Envestra, SEA Gas Pipeline, Energy Infrastructure Investments, EII2, Hastings Diversified Utilities Fund, Ethane Pipeline Income Fund and Allgas Gas Network.

Fragile to Agile Engagement

In 2010, APA Group established an internal enterprise architecture (EA) practice and in early 2011, requested Fragile to Agile to assess with its progress. This was conducted using Fragile to Agile’s Value Assessment service offering. At the time, the assessment identified the strengths and weaknesses of the EA practice and assisted in the development of plans for evolving the maturity of the practice. In particular, the absence of a Business Capability Model was identified as a material gap in APA’s planned approach to EA. The recommendation to develop a Business Capability Model was adopted and its use is now an important component of its APA’s EA practice.
